Reduced Order Models for Partial Differential Equation Systems using Comsol and Matlab-Simulink

In Process control an important objective is to design efficient and sustainable systems. However, this usually implies to develop complex and large-scale models described by partial differential equations (PDEs) leading to high-dimensionality systems. Dimensionality reduction techniques are thus necessary to obtain reduced order models being suitable for control systems. The objective of this work is to obtain reduced order models for PDE systems, particularly those defined in irregular spatial domain, using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method and integrating Comsol and Matlab-Simulink. An important problem in the POD method corresponds to the stacking of the spatial mesh's nodes in the snapshot matrix. Using a heat transfer system in two dimensions, we obtained that the system's modes and their associated variance were invariant to the stacking order  of the nodes. In this way, this enables us to conclude that stacking order of the nodes in a matrix is irrelevant to obtain reduced order model for PDE systems. In this work it is also shown how to extract all  information of the Comsol's model to Matlab. This information includes: PDE system's  numerical solution, boundary conditions, simulation time and node location, among others. As an example, we simulated the homogeneous solution of a heating system of one dimension  in Matlab-simulink using information obtained from Comsol.

Bioreactors in series with recirculation economic analysis

Continuous bioprocess in industrial scale is still a challenge for bioprocess engineering, the microorganism growth rate is very slow, then it is necessary a big reactor volume to obtain a moderate production. Furthermore, the scale up of bioreactors is a hard task, because generally the bioprocess productivity has a strong decrease as the bioreactor scale up. That is why; the bioreactors in series with recirculation system can be used as a possibility to obtain an industrial scale continuous bioprocess, because, it is not necessary to operate with big scale bioreactors. Anyway, the application of several bioreactors in series must be evaluated on an economic framework. This work design an economic scenario to evaluate the economic potential of the system while productivity increases, this scenario is related with a hypothetical continuous chemostat operation. Design and operation variables were evaluated based on Lagrange parameters sensitivity analysis. The analysis shows that bioreactor volume has a big impact on the cost function..
