Voltage control on power systems based on optimal power flow

Voltage control over all nodes of a power system mainly depends of a primary regulation operating in automatic state. In the case of generation nodes, these controllers evaluate the local voltage and act over machine excitation system indirectly modifying the reactive power that this device interchanges with network. Commonly, a superior control stage, operating with longer time constants, defines the participation level that each system generator will have over the active and reactive powers required for the network. Only a few power systems in the world have considered automatic operation of this stage, whilst most countries allow some technical operators use their experiences with the network behavior to define this participation level in a manual way.

In this presentation a control algorithm based on an optimal power flow to regulate voltage profile of a system is applied. This algorithm aims to keep all power system voltages close to a reference value satisfying with several important restrictions related with system operation.

Frequency regulation in power systems with renewable penetration

The integration level of renewable energy sources into the grid system over the world has been growing at a very fast rate in the last few years. In future, renewable-based power is expected to be at least comparable to the conventional power generation systems. Nevertheless, the variations in renewable power can induce negative effects over power systems, such as frequency disturbances. Given these conditions, there may also be a need to rethink the classic frequency control loops due to power changes produced by renewable energy sources (RES). Using a state-space realization of the frequency regulation scheme, the impact of different renewable penetration scenarios on system frequency performance metrics can be assessed. This presentation will be focused on wind generation units and its models, trying to determine their dynamic characteristics and operational margins with respecto to frequency regulation.
