Tubular photobioreactor model for light–dark cycles controls

This presentation shows a model of a photobioreactor (PBR) combining different phenomena inside a reactor for microalgae culture such as: fluid dynamics, photosynthesis kinetics and mass balances. The proposed model has a new characteristic; it is the inclusion of an empirical equation which takes into account the Light and Dark cycles behavior in a dynamic mathematical model for PBR production prediction. Finally, the model of PBR was simulated with a regulatory PI control strategy, showing adequate results of the system in closed loop.

Optimal economic design method of continuous photobioreactors for microalgae culture  

Microalgae culture in photobioreactors is expensive to produce, because the process consumes a lot of energy in the unit operation; as a result microalgae culture cannot compete in the industrial market. Anyway, microalgae culture has a lot of benefits besides economic issues, so there is a lot of work on the topic. Literature about the topic consider that optimization of microalgae culture is necessary. But, optimization needs a lot of effort to make. One possibility to obtain more productivity efficiently from photobioreactor operation is to use a continuous system. Pitifully, industrial continuous bioprocess is still on research. This work introduces the use of several continuous photobioreactors in series with recirculation as an option to design a large scale continuous bioprocess system. The system is evaluated using economic cost index so we can obtain the optimal economic design and analyze the effect of design variables. Moreover, sensibility analysis is used to evaluate the important variables that affect the cost. Then, this information is used to characterize the variables and constraint that are worth to work on.
